Extras: Possibilities for Extra Credit and Extra Learning Each extra credit assignment is good for one replacement participation grade. You can fulfill up to (but not more than) three of these opportunities. Each response should fill about a page. All extra credit is due, in typed hard copy form, no later than the our last class meeting.
Since the semester is wrapping up, there will be few opportunities for attending events for extra credit. However, if you're still interested in writing responses, feel free to choose an article from the "For Further Reading" category on the Links and Resources page and write a response to it.
Marjane Satrapi, author of the graphic novel Persepolis, will be speaking at 6:30 p.m. in the Bo Campbell Auditorium in the Cox Communication Academic Center for Student Athletes. Go hear her speak (and have your book signed afterwards if you have a copy!) and write a response: what did you think of her talk? Did anything she talked about intersect with our class at all?
International Film Festival: Brick Lane will show on Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 3 and 4, at 7:30 pm in Dodson Auditorium. Based on Monica Ali's novel, the film traces the journey of an Indian woman stuck in an arranged marriage in an immigrant community in London. Go see the film, and write a response to any part of the film that strikes you, especially its exploration of how culture shapes gender roles and expectations or its treatment of marriage.
The Super Bowl! Talk about a cultural text full of gendered ideology: the Super Bowl, and especially the ads shown during the game, always provide lots of material to analyze. If you choose to write about it, pick something specific (one ad campaign, one element of the half-time show, one commentator, etc.) and tell me what you notice in terms of gender. Think about our framework (Producer-Audience-Medium-Message) to figure out some of the things The Super Bowl might be communicating about gender.
Gender on Film: The Women's Center is showing films all semester (the next one is Monday, Feb.9). Go see any of these films and write a reflection, based on your response to the film and any ways that it engages issues we've covered in class.
Angela Davis, famous
African American feminist scholar and activist will be speaking on
Friday, January 23. She's the keynote speaker for LSU's
commemorative celebration of Dr. King. Details can be found
here. To earn your extra credit, go hear her, and write about a page in response
to Davis's speech, telling me what she said, what you thought about
what she said, and any ways that her speech might connect to things
we'll talk about in this course.
