MAJOR RESEARCH PROJECT: INVESTIGATING AN ISSUE IN EDUCATION

From now until Spring Break, we’ll be working on one big project with several steps in the process. The steps include:

  • A short, persuasive essay, in which you will get your argument started. We’ll focus on logic, argumentation strategies, integrating source material, and the issues themselves for this part of the assignment, working to make sure everyone has a workable, interesting topic worth pursuing for the next 9 weeks and has thought critically about which position to argue.
  • Oral presentations and responses. You will use your short essay to give a presentation to the class on your issue, so that we can collectively think about where you might go next in your research. You will also participate in helping your classmates think through their issues. Part of your grade for this portion of the project will come from your written responses to some of your classmates.
  • Research Report. In order to help you get started on the longer paper, I’ll ask you to compile a list of sources and summaries, to make sure you have enough material to work with.
  • Long, researched argumentative essay. This essay will be the finished product of all the work you’ve put into your issue throughout the unit. You’ll create an argument about your issue, sustain it for 8-10 pages, and back it up with substantial research.
